“Armoring is the condition that results when energy is bound by muscular contraction and does not flow through the body”(Reich:1936)
This session focuses on gently acknowledging and feeling body parts that have become tense, numb, or painful, sometimes over a long period. Using the De-Armouring technique—a soft and deliberate application of pressure developed by Wilhelm Reich ( a major contributor to the body-mind sciences of the early 20th century, and credited as being the key driver of this form of scientific inquiry in the West up until the 1940s) we can regain sensitivity in areas where the body has created "armor" to protect us from uncomfortable emotions.
Understanding Body Armor
Our bodies naturally protect us from feeling difficult emotions until we are ready to address them. Each time we suppress our emotions, the body stores these feelings in our tissues, leading to muscle tension and even pain. This process often begins in childhood when expressions of sadness, rage, or even happiness are discouraged by parents or teachers. Over time, we adapt by concealing our emotions until we reach a point where we no longer feel them at all.
This coping or defense mechanism can impact our relationships, mood, and capacity for pleasure. Often, it leaves us with a persistent sense of anxiety, as repressed feelings linger beneath the surface.
The De-Armouring Process
During a De-Armouring session, you might experience pain followed by relief, as the stuck energy in these points is released. This release can make you feel energized, expanded, and lighter as if there's more space in your body. It's not uncommon to cry or laugh spontaneously, as emotions are set free.
This type of bodywork facilitates a new level of communication with your body. You learn to listen to and integrate parts of yourself that have been feeling neglected or shut off. It’s a progressive and slow approach, working on the nervous system to process information safely, creating a foundation for the body and mind to heal.
Genital De-Armouring
As part of the comprehensive body treatment, I also offer genital De-armouring when you are ready. This area can hold significant trauma from experiences of shame, hurt, or non-consensual touch. Negative messages about the genitals and sexuality, often received in childhood, can lead to physical pain in the pelvic area and contribute to sexual dysfunction.
Genital nonarousal massage can help release pain and underlying emotions often stored in this area. It aids healing from various traumas associated with womanhood, including difficult births, period-related shame, painful sex (dyspareunia), and unwanted sexual experiences. Receiving conscious, respectful, and consensual touch from a therapist is healing and beneficial in itself.
Important note: you determine what areas are comfortable to be touched and can pause or stop the session at any time. Your boundaries are respected at all times.
